Quinn To Unveil New Budget Cuts Today
07/01/2010

Governor Pat Quinn is expected to lay out exactly where he decided to cut spending in the state budget for the just arrived new fiscal year.  The governor has called a press conference for 10:30 this morning in Chicago to discuss the budget.  He has said he plans to cut as little from education, human services and public safety as possible.  But with the state buried under billions in unpaid bills, and even more in debt, some aren't so sure that's possible.  Earlier this year, Quinn asked lawmakers to approve a one-percentage point income tax increase.  That didn't happen.  Neither did a plan to borrow about four-million dollars to pay down the state's pension debt.  Instead, lawmakers handed Quinn the power to personally decide where the cuts should be made.  Generally, the legislature as a whole would make those decisions.
